What you need to know for travel:
1. Make your appointment early. Ideally, you should make an appointment 1-2 months before travel in case you need a series of shots e.g. Hep A/B
2. If it is less than 4 weeks before you leave, let us know when you schedule your appointment so that we can place you on an accelerated vaccine schedule if needed.
3. Most vaccines take 1-2 weeks to provide you immunity protection and some vaccines must be given in a series over a period of days or sometimes weeks.
4. So you have time to get all your immunization records together. Review the links below to determine which routine vaccines you may need as many countries have diseases that are not prevalent in the U.S. ( http://www.cdc.gov/vaccines/recs/schedules).
5. The U.S. routine schedule for childhood immunizations may need to be accelerated if a child is traveling with you. Check with your Pediatrian and update them before you arrive for your travel visit.
6. Vaccine needs vary considerably from country to country but the best place to start is with the recommended vaccine schedules for children and adults. Adults often neglect to keep up the recommended schedule of booster vaccinations, particularly if the risk of infection is low. Additionally, some adults have never been vaccinated at all. It is important to realize that diseases such as diphtheria and poliomyelitis, which no longer occur in most industrialized countries, many be present in those visited by travelers. Pre-travel precautions should include booster doses of routine vaccines if the “recommended adult schedule” is not updated.
Additional vaccines are advised on the basis of a travel risk assessment for the individual traveler. In deciding which vaccines are appropriate, the following factors should be considered for each vaccine:
- risk of exposure to the disease
- age, health status, vaccination history
- special risk factors
- reactions to previous vaccine doses, allergies
- risk of infecting others
Mandatory vaccination, as authorized by the International Health Regulations, now concerns only yellow fever. Yellow fever vaccination is carried out for two different reasons:
(a.) to protect the individual in areas where there is a risk of yellow fever infection, and
(b.) to protect vulnerable countries from importation of the yellow fever virus.
Travelers should therefore be vaccinated if they visit a country where there is a risk of exposure to yellow fever. They must be vaccinated if they visit a country that requires yellow fever vaccination as a condition of entry: this condition applies to all travelers who arrive from (including airport transit) a yellow fever endemic country.
